In a house where there are more than one cats, cat fight is usual. This often occurs when one of the cats assumes a superior position for itself in the group. This cat insists on being fed first and also urinates around the home at times. The skirmishes start occurring when younger cats grow up and challenge the supremacy of this cat. They may also take place because of food, mating or outsider cats.
However, to control such fights, you may follow the instructions given below:
- It is advised to put gardening or thick gloves on to avoid any scratches or cuts which you may get when dealing with fighting cats. You must never step in between two cats that are fighting for they may instead attack you!
- Keep the nails of the cats trimmed at all times.
- Spray water on cats until they stop fighting. You can use a bottle, a water pistol or even a garden hose. You may also jump around or do other extreme actions to make their fighting seem less interesting so they focus their energy on escaping you instead of focusing on the fight. Its main objective is to help avert their attention.
- Surprise the cat into a state of shock. You may throw a blanket on them when they’re fighting or make a loud noise e.g. that of a car horn or the vacuum cleaner.
- You can also spray a can of compressed air near them. Make sure you NEVER spray it ON them!
- Cats are one of those animals that need their space so when keeping a lot of cats make sure you have enough room for them that they can get away from each other whenever they want.
- Never touch the cats when they are fighting. The most suitable way is to use a broom to lead them into different rooms once they have been separated. Leave them on their own for a while so they unruffle themselves. A washroom is the ideal place. Don’t forget to put in some water and food!
- If you have a case of stray cat fighting with your cat, even then don’t try to separate the two physically yourself. Use any of the above methods and once separated, pick your cat immediately so they may not indulge in any further scuffle. However, it is advised that you wait for the cat to calm down before picking it up. You can also keep them apart by holding a broom between them and guiding your own cat into the house. On the other hand, if both are unknown cats, then once they’re separated, shoo them away so they don’t get a chance to re-initiate a fight.
- If the fight is over food, you can put two or more dishes of food in front of the cats to attract their attention.
- In case the fights between cats are based on mating issues, spaying or castrating (as the case may be) can be very useful.
- Cats are a species that also like to fight for recreation. It is very important that it be known whether the cats are actually fighting or merely playing. This can be told by looking at their respective dispositions, especially their tails, ears, eyes and where they’ve positioned themselves with respect to the ground.
