Finding the best food for your kitten is very important since this is the age of its growth and unless properly fed, the consequences will stay with it for its whole life. Just like human babies, our feline babies also need an enriched food in their young and tender age. We have extensively covered Cat Food Recipes and hence here we will cover food for kittens.

Kitten Milk Substitutes

It is sometimes difficult for very young kittens to cope with hard food for survival. Thus, here are a few recipes that will help you keep your kitten healthy while giving it all the essential nutrients and substituting for milk that is mandatory at that age.

1. Emergency Kitten Milk

Ingredients:

12 oz. boiling water

1 envelope Knox unflavored gelatin

1-12 oz. can evaporated canned milk

2 tablespoons mayonnaise

2 tablespoons plain yogurt

1 tablespoons light corn syrup

1 egg yolk

Method:

Mix the gelatin in boiling water until it completely dissolves. Then add the rest of the ingredients and mix in a mixer so that everything is properly blended. Pour it it a covered pan or a bowl and refrigerate it. Take small quantities as needed and warm it before giving it to your kitten. Although it will be good for 7 days, it is recommended that you use it for fewer days.

2. Infant Kitten Formula

Ingredients:

1 can evaporated milk (or 1 can goat’s milk)

1 cup Pedialyte (or generic equivalent, unflavored)

1 whole egg

1 packet unflavored gelatin

1/2 teaspoon liquid infant vitamins

Method:

Put all of the ingredients in a blender until they completely mix together. Put this in the refrigerator and use as needed. However, do not use it after 72 hours of refrigerating. Take small quantities and heat it in the microwave. The milk should be luke warm. Also always blend it before giving it to the kitten.

In case you don’t have a kitten feeding bottle, you may use a syringe without the needle. Always start with small doses and progress to bigger intakes. Start with one feeding every 2 hours in the first two weeks. Then, once every 3 hours in the third week and once in 4 hours in the forth week. You can add a small can of ground kitten food in the mixture in the forth week. Make sure that the food supplement is of high quality.

3. Kitten Milk

Ingredients:

13 ounces unflavored Pedialyte (or any unflavoured store-brand version)

12 ounces evaporated milk

8 ounces plain yogurt (1% milkfat NOT light)

2-1/2 ounces lamb baby food (make sure there is no onion powder!!)

2 egg yolks

2 tablespoons white corn syrup

Method:

Mix all the ingredients in a blender until even. You can freeze it until needed. However, make sure you mix the whole mixture before pouring some out. Heat it in the mircowave oven and feed it to your kitten.

Always make sure that the milk or formula is luke warm! You can check it by testing it against the inside of your wrist.

Typically, a two week old kitten will drink upto 1/2 ounce of milk in 4 hours while a four week old kitten will drink from 1 to 1 1/2 ounces in 5 hours.
