History of Sphynx Cat aka Canadian Hairless

The history of Sphynx goes back to 1966 when, in Cabbagetown, Toronto, a short-haired cat gave birth to a hairless kitten named Prune. However, they are a product of natural mutation which happens every 15 to 20 years. The kitten Prune was used to further develop the breed. This was met with initial difficulty as there wasn’t enough gene pool available. But with the naturally occuring birth of another hairless kitten opened the doors for further advancement in the development of the breed.

Out-crosses are strictly prohibited in Sphynxes.

Physical Features of Sphynx Cat

The most prominent feature of Sphynx is its hairless body, though there are traces of some hair on the nose, tail and toes. Any pattern or color is allowed in this breed and may be present at any age. The color is usually determined by the pigment determining the color of the skin. Its skin is said to be like a hot water bottle covered with suede. Whiskers and eyes brows may or may not be present.

The Sphynx is a medium sized cat with a muscular body with the females being smaller than the males. There must have a pot belly too which is one of the essentials. It has big eyes that gives it an intelligent look and a wedge-shaped head.

Sphynxes are total extroverts. They are clumsy entertainers, almost as if they are intentionally being clumsy. They very intelligent and curious. They also get along with everyone including humans and animals very well. They are loving and love attention. This is one of the prime reasons you will find your sphynx doing stupid things. They are extremely active and always up to be in the spotlight.

They have a lack of coat for which reason they’ll always find themselves an animal or a human to snuggle with when its cold. They may even sleep with their owner under the sheets. Hairlessness also makes them more prone to oil absorption for which frequent baths (optimally once a week) and ear cleaning would be required. However, this should not be much of a deal if the cat has gotten used to it from the very beginning.
