If you are not a dog person but want dog-like qualities in your cat then Chausie is the cat for you. Fiercely loyal and eager to be trained, Chausies are a delight to have. Looking very much like wild cats, they are a cross-breed of a Jungle cat and a domestic cat. They are also known by other names such as the Jungle Curl, Mountain Cougar and Stone Cougar.

History of Chausie Cat

Although there have been reports of Felis Chaus hybrids centuries from today, the Chausies were professionally bred in late 1960s. They are a cross between the Jungle cat and a domestic cat. This cross was made because of the popular demand for exotic cats. The Jungle cats cannot be adopted as keeping wild cats is not allowed. At the moment, the only allowable cross is between Abyssinian and the domestic shorthair. It must also be kept in mind that your pet is F4 which means that it must be 4 generations apart from its wild ancestors.

It is recognised by TICA.

Physical Appearance of Chausie Cat

Chausies are comparetively bigger cats principally because of their ancesters. They have long bodies with depressed flanks. Their head is longer than usual and hence, the resemblance with a cougar which has given them names like stone cougar or mountain cougar. They have big ears which are placed far apart, almost on the corner of the head, with tufts on the tips. Their tail is 3/4th of their body’s length.

As Chausies are big cats, the kittens can take upto even 3 years to achieve the full size. The new-borns are with either spots or stripes all over their bodieswhich only remain on the tail, legs and face once they have grown up.

The Chausies have a short-haired fur. The grizzled tabby pattern is unique and exclusive to this breed. The colors that are allowed are black, brown and silver. The hair is essentially black with bits of white in between and a tinge of the tabby pattern.

Personality of Chausie Cat

Chausies have a lot of dog-like traits. They are comfortable with leashes and love to play with water. Along with being extremely faithful, almost dog-like, they can also be trained. They are said to be very intelligent, loving and friendly. They are also very lively and curious, and roam around exploring the surroundings. They get along well with other people and animals. They also need attention and would want their owner to spend time with them. However, if you are looking for a lap cat or a quiet cat then a Chausie is certainly not it.

Since, the Chausies are more active than normal cats, they need more time to play. This has to be fulfilled if you want your cat to stay out of trouble. Also, they can develop certain food allergies. For this, you must get your Chausie thoroughly examined by a vet!
