Playful and intelligent, these cats make excellent companions. They are very lively and suitable for people who have enough time to spend with them.

History of Devon Rex

This breed was discovered in 1959 when a stray calico female cat gave birth to a curly-coated kitten which was named Kirlee. This kitten, Kirlee, is the male ancestor of all Devon Rex cats. Since it resembled te Cornish Rex, it was believed that the two are related. But a cross between the two produced straight-haired offsprings which negated the hypothesis. This laid the basis of a new breed: the Devon Rex.

Appearance of Devon Rex Cat

The Devon Rex is extremely cute with almost elfin looks. The very big, low-set ears and big, innocent eyes give an almost childish impression. They have strong, medium-sized, muscular bodies and weigh from 6 to 9 lbs with females weighing less than the males.

They have curly whiskers and a curly coat with the thickness varying from animal to animal. Some have a long coat of curly hair while others have very thin ones. The coat size may also vary in the lifetime of a cat. A kitten sheds its coat while developing while an older one changes its coat size seasonally matching the conditions. They also have some guard hair that are softer than those found in other cats. The patterns allowed in Devon Rex are points, solid, shaded, tortoiseshell, calico, bi-color, harlequin, smoke colors and the tabby pattern.

Although, they have the same body temperature as other cats, they feel warmer than others. This may be because of the quality of conduction of the light, thin coat. They also shed inspite of the myth that it doesn’t.

Personality of Devon Rex Cat

The Devons are an excited lot. They are very energetic and will jump around trying to get into absolutely everything that they can. They love their human companions and will try to get involved in their routine by being around at all times. They are also quick to sniff and get into any kind of food they can get their hands on. They are curious and love playing games. Overall they are an irresistibly cute, loving and lively breed. They are also very intelligent and may surprise you more than just once because of their inquisitive nature.

This breed is very easy and convenient to manage. They don’t need much grooming and usually a quick shower will suffice. They also need the nail clipping regimen and sometimes even ear cleaning. Other than that there isn’t much you need to do.

The Devon Rex is said to be hypo-allergenic so people with allergies must consider this and make suitable arrangements.
